What Is the CEFR Scale and What Does Your Level Check Result Mean?

By YIZIK Team

CEFR (A1 to C2) describes real-world language ability; our free English Level Check maps your answers onto that same scale in a few minutes, no login required.

What CEFR actually measures

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages describes what a learner can actually do, not just what they scored on one test. A1 and A2 are beginner levels, B1 and B2 are intermediate and C1 and C2 are advanced, with each level defined by real tasks: can you follow a simple conversation, can you write a structured argument, can you follow a fast native discussion.

How it lines up with IELTS

There's a widely used approximate mapping: roughly Band 4 sits around A2/B1, Band 5 to 6 sits around B1/B2, Band 6.5 to 7.5 sits around B2/C1 and Band 8 and above sits around C1/C2. It's an approximation, not an official conversion, since IELTS and CEFR are measured differently but it's useful for understanding roughly where you stand.

What our Level Check actually does

Our free check asks a short set of grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, writing and speaking questions, then places your result on the CEFR scale using a fixed, published scoring rule: the highest band where you scored at least 70% on that band's own questions. It's a snapshot, not a substitute for a real IELTS sitting but it's built in-house from real questions you actually answer, not a generic self-assessment quiz.

Why writing and speaking are captured but not scored yet

Grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening are marked automatically and instantly. Writing and speaking genuinely need either a trained human or a properly calibrated AI model to grade fairly, so for now we capture your written and spoken answers so you can see them, without pretending to auto-grade them until that's built properly.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as an official IELTS result?

No. It's a free, quick, in-house estimate, useful for orientation, not a substitute for sitting the real IELTS exam.

How long does the check take?

A few minutes. It's deliberately short, just enough to place you reasonably on the CEFR scale, not a full mock exam.

What happens to my writing and speaking answers?

They're saved so you can review them on your certificate page, but they don't currently affect your CEFR result.
