What IELTS Score Do You Need for UK, Canada, Australia or the US?

By YIZIK Team

Most undergraduate programmes ask for Band 6.0 to 6.5, most postgraduate programmes ask for 6.5 to 7.0 and competitive courses or skilled-migration routes often ask for 7.0 or higher.

Why there's no single answer

Every university, college and immigration programme sets its own minimum and the same country can have wildly different requirements depending on the course. A foundation year and a medical degree at the same UK university will not ask for the same score.

Rough bands to plan around

Undergraduate degrees commonly ask for 6.0 to 6.5 overall. Postgraduate degrees commonly ask for 6.5 to 7.0 overall, often with a minimum in each individual section too, not just the average. Highly competitive courses, teacher training and some healthcare degrees frequently ask for 7.0 or above.

Skilled migration is its own category

Points-based immigration systems in countries like Canada and Australia award more points for higher IELTS bands, so there often isn't a single "required" score, just a scale where higher scores are worth more toward your application.

Plan backward from the requirement, not forward from a guess

Look up the exact number for your specific course or visa category before you start preparing. A diagnostic or level check tells you where you stand today; the requirement tells you exactly how far you need to go, which is the number that actually matters for your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is 6.5 a 'good' score?

It's a strong, widely accepted score for many undergraduate and some postgraduate programmes, though competitive courses may ask for more.

Do all four sections need to meet the same minimum?

Not always overall, but many programmes set a minimum per section as well as an overall minimum, so check both.

Does a higher score than required help?

For migration points-based systems, yes, often directly. For most university admissions, once you clear the minimum it usually doesn't add extra weight.
