NewsIELTS Academic vs General Training: What's the Difference?
Choose Academic for university admission and most skilled professions; choose General Training for migration, work or secondary education abroad.
What's identical
Listening and Speaking are exactly the same test, with the same content and the same marking, regardless of which module you sit.
What's different
Reading and Writing use different tasks. Academic Reading uses longer, more complex texts taken from academic sources and Academic Writing asks you to describe a chart, graph or diagram (Task 1) plus an essay (Task 2). General Training Reading uses everyday texts like notices and advertisements and General Training Writing asks for a letter (Task 1) plus an essay (Task 2).
Who needs which module
Academic is for university or college admission and for many professional registration bodies. General Training is for immigration applications, work visas and secondary education. If you're not sure, check the exact requirement from the institution or immigration authority first. This decision is theirs to make, not IELTS's.
Does one look "easier" than the other
Neither module is scored on an easier or harder scale; both use the same 1 to 9 bands. The content is simply matched to what each audience actually needs to read and write in real life.
Frequently asked questions
Can I switch modules after registering?
Usually not without re-registering and paying again, so confirm which module you need before you book your test.
Do universities ever accept General Training?
Rarely, and only if explicitly stated. Most universities require Academic specifically.
Is General Training shorter?
The total test time is the same. Only the Reading and Writing task content differs.
