Can You Retake Just One Section of IELTS?

By YIZIK Team

IELTS now offers a One Skill Retake option for the Academic module, letting you resit only your weakest section but acceptance by institutions varies, so confirm before relying on it.

The traditional rule

For most of IELTS's history, a low score in any one section meant retaking the entire test, all four sections again, even if three of them were already fine.

What One Skill Retake changes

IELTS One Skill Retake lets a candidate who has taken the full Academic test resit a single section within a limited window and combines the new section score with the three original scores to produce a new overall result.

Where it's available and where it isn't

Availability depends on your test centre and, more importantly, on whether your receiving institution actually accepts a One Skill Retake result. Many universities and immigration authorities still expect a single, complete four-section sitting. Always confirm directly with the institution before assuming a partial retake will be accepted.

The safer default

Until you've confirmed acceptance, treat a full resit as the reliable path and One Skill Retake as a convenience you use only once you know it will actually count.
